New Legislation: Companies House Identity Verification

As of 18th November 2025, all company directors and people of significant control (PSCs) must verify their identity with Companies House.

The changes come under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, which aims to improve transparency and combat fraudulent activity within UK limited companies.

Who needs to verify their identity?

·         New directors and PSCs – you will need to verify your identity before you are appointed

·         Existing directors – you must verify your identity within 14 days of your company’s next confirmation statement

·         Existing PSCs who aren’t directors – you must verify within 14 days of the start of your birth month

How to verify your identity

There are two main options to verify your identity:

1.      Gov.UK One Login – a free online service provided by Gov.uk

2.      Authorised Corporate Service Providers (ACSPs) – as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, TyneRede Accountancy Ltd can verify your identity on your behalf

We can assist you with this process to ensure it’s completed correctly and on time. You don’t need to be a client for us to do this either.

What will you need?

·         UK passport

·         UK photocard driving licence

·         Non-UK biometric passport

·         UK biometric residence permit or card

·         UK Frontier Worker permit

Each director/PSC will also need their own individual email address.

What happens after verification?

·         Companies House will issue you a personal verification code – you must retain this securely

·         You will need to provide this code to us to enable us to submit your confirmation statement and other company filings

Key points to remember

·         You only need to verify once – you don’t need to verify for every company you are a director of; your verification code can be entered into multiple companies

·         Make sure your Companies House records match your ID details

·         Make a note of your unique verification code as you will need this when making submissions to Companies House, or to be appointed as a director or PSC

·         You will need to be verified before your first confirmation statement date after 18th November 2025

·         You still need to verify your identity if your company files dormant accounts

What happens if you don’t comply?

The consequences of non-compliance can be serious. Without a verified identity, you won’t be able to make filings or incorporate further companies. As your accountant, we want to make sure you avoid these risks – early preparation is key!
